Major League Polo (MLP) is unique in world polo in that it incorporates a SuperDraft as a means of polo player recruitment ahead of each season.

Widely used in other American sports, such as American Football, hockey and basketball, it is a flagship event for teams competing in the MLP Season.

The MLP SuperDraft is an event in which its 16 U.S. City-based licensed pro polo sports teams select players who are in college or university, or who have been signed by the League.

Similar to the NFL draft in format, the idea behind the process is to encourage parity in the League by allowing weaker teams a better chance to improve their rosters. Traditionally, local minor league polo clubs have the same players each year and do not have draft possibilities in their local club play within their minor league USPA circuit tournaments as they are not official pro sports teams. Only Major League Polo hosts a SuperDraft for its star players.

MLP SuperDraft rules

1. Expansion teams get the first pick if applicable.

2. Non-Play-off teams will receive the next picks, ordered in reverse of their season finish.

3. Play-off teams are next, ordered by the round in which they were eliminated.

4. MLP World Series of Polo Cup winners get the last pick.

5. There are no polo player handicap ratings minimum or maximums to enter the MLS SuperDraft. Players will be selected by team player preference and built out with no minimum or maximum team goal handicap.

6. In the event there are two expansion teams the first pick will be determined by a coin toss.

7. MLP Draft Picks are allowed to be traded between teams as part of wider deals involving the exchange of players.

The 2022/2023 Season MLP SuperDraft will take place in August 31, 2022 and on September 31, 2022 via live stream in Atlanta, Georgia.

How will the MLP SuperDraft work?

The MLP SuperDraft spans over three separate days. The 6 Rounds will fill: 4 Primary Player Positions and 2 Secondary Rounds for Team Alternates. Teams must fill their required drafts of 1 Female Pro Athlete and 1 Collegiate Draft Player (male or female). This landmark sports initiative requires both 1 Female Pro Polo Athlete Draft Pick per U.S. City sports team and 1 Collegiate Draft Pick. 

In the first round, MLP teams have 10 minutes to select each Draft Pick, but only 7 minutes in the second round. Teams receive 5 minutes for decision making in the next 3 rounds and only 4 in the final round. The MLP teams will utilize a private channel for the submission of Draft Picks and in order to allow team heads and coaches to communicate and strategize.

The MLP Digital Team’s primary mission is to embrace new streaming and broadcast technologies to create an unprecedented digital presence for live streamed broadcast. As polo becomes more globalized, its fan engagement and accessibility are a high priority.

In order to be eligible for the 2022/2023 MLP SuperDraft, a polo player must:

• Be at least 18-years-old by date of SuperDraft; and

• Register for the draft with the MLP SuperDraft by announced deadline.

Players who register but are not selected during the 2022/2023 MLP SuperDraft will qualify to be acquired as a Discovery Player during the 2022/2023 season. Players who do not register will not be eligible to be on the roster of any MLP World Series of Polo teams until the conclusion of the 2022/2023 MLP World Series of Polo season. We encourage all players who might want any opportunity to play in the MLP World Series of Polo in 2022/2023 Season to register.
